Arif (Al) Mawani
Al is the owner and operator of the Shuttlesport Badminton Academy. The academy has been under the direction of Al since 2000. Al has completed his Master Learning Facilitator Certification, which allows him to train and certify other coaches. Al has extensive coaching experience - internationally, nationally and provincially. He has guided British Columbia to the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games, placed players on the Commonwealth Games teams, coached at international events including the All England Championships, Canada Open, and U.S. Open where he led players in winning the prestigious U.S. Open Women’s Doubles events. In addition, Al is a NCCP certified level 3 coach and has written the Badminton 2000plus coaching manual and the Athlete’s Training Diary.
High Performance Coach
Kiran is a former Indian national team member. He has competed in numerous tournaments internationally. After moving to Vancouver he was the top male singles player for a period of 5 years and won the provincial title 3 times. He has been coaching juniors for the past decade before joining Shuttlesport.
Senior Club Professional
Thomas has been coaching at the academy since 2000. He has been instrumental in the development of the juniors, many of those have gone on to play competitively in the provincial circuits. Thomas, is a Regional certified coach and also certified with the BWF Shuttle Time coaching program.
Development Coordinator & Provincial Performance Coach
Zach is the Development & Performance Coach at the academy. He has been in this position for 3 years and is a certified BWF Shuttle Time & Provincial Certified Coach. Zach was the Head Coach for the 2018 BC Winter Games Badminton team (which clinched Silver Medal). Zach still actively trains and competes provincially with a goal to play in 2020's Open National Championships.
Provincial Performance Coach
Clarence has been coaching with Shuttlesport for a year after competing at the National level and specializing in doubles. His focus is to develop our up and coming Juniors and also work with our Performance doubles players. Clarence is a BWF Shuttle Time & Provincial Certified Coach.
Jalil is our most recent addition to the Performance Coaching team with his BWF Shuttle Time Certification. Jalil has played competitive badminton in both Afghanistan and Pakistan between 2002 and 2009. His key achievements include:
