The Douglas College Royals badminton team showed exactly why they haven’t lost a league match in over 5 years. Despite playing a man short and without start performer Darren Hong, the team finished a perfect 5-0 and finished first in the team competition. Melody Liang, Stephanie Ko, RuiLin Huang, Amy Leung and Rey Luo all put in strong performances by winning all 5 of their team matches. With the team shorthanded the 3 veteran ladies(Melody, Stephanie & RuiLin) who between them have won an impressive 9 national titles put in a powerful performance to lead the Royals to Victory.
With the Individual event on Sunday the Royals squad had an opportunity to increase their overall lead at the half way point of the season. Once again the 3 ladies dominated the ladies events. RuiLin won the Women’s Singles event – her 10th consecutive BCCAA singles tournament win – and teamed up with team captain Stephanie Ko to win the Women’s Doubles event. Melody Liang then teamed up with newcomer Rey Luo to defeat the #1 seeds from Kwantlen College to win the Mixed Doubles event. In all Douglas won 3 of the 5 individual events with Rey Luo finishing 3rd in the Men’s Singles event and Amy Leung and Jerzyl Panuncialman finishing a career best 5th in the Mixed Doubles event.
The next BCCAA tournament will be in January at Vancouver Island University before the Royals host the Provincials in February.
