Douglas College’s Badminton Machine Has Done It Again

Five Royals earned gold medals at the CCAA 2011 Championships Saturday at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB.

RuiLin Huang captured the women’s singles title, Stephanie Ko and Melody Liang won women’s doubles while Darren Hong and Wei Luo captured men’s doubles.

Douglas College coach Al Mawani also led the mixed-school BCAA 1 squad which claimed the overall provincial team title.

Mawani has coached Douglas to six-consecutive BCCAA provincial titles. At the nationals he watched his athletes win early and often. In fact, Douglas athletes dominated on the court by captured all of their 21 matches in straight sets – a remarkable 42-0 run.

Third-year star Huang overcame Sun Yiang of NAIT 21-11, 21-13 in the women’s final. Veterans Ko and Liang also defeated NAIT 21-15, 21-5.

On the men’s side, Hong and Lo had to overcome BCCAA championship duo Pierre Tang and Chris Chung, who had captured the provincial crown at Douglas in February. This time, the Douglas duo posted a 21-14, 21-17 victory.
