Douglas College Badminton looking for 8th straight provincial championship

The Douglas College badminton team started the 2011-12 badminton campaign at host Vancouver Island University. The Royals badminton team are in pursuit of their 8th straight provincial title. The weekend began with the team winning the round robin team event with a perfect record of 5 wins and 0 losses. The team came out very strong on Friday evening and there was no let up on Saturday morning.

Once the team competition was wrapped up the Royals turned their attention to the individual competition. A quick start by 3 time national champion RuiLin Huang in the women’s singles set the tone for the defending champions. RuiLin won the final without losing a game and defeated Veronica Yeung of Capilano University in the final. RuiLin then teamed up with Charmagne Yeung, also a 3 time national champion, to win the women’s doubles event, once again without a loss. Charmagne who last played for Douglas College in the 2007-08 season joined Logan Campbell, a highly rated rookie recruit from Calgary, to win the mixed doubles event, again without losing a game. The sweep seemed a possibility as the remaining 2 men’s events had Douglas teams in the final. In the men’s singles event, Luo Wei, last year’s men’s doubles national champion, dominated the singles competition to win the event, again without a loss. The men’s doubles win by Luo Wei and Logan Campbell completed the sweep. The pair really weren’t threatened throughout and met another Douglas pairing, Bob Sharma and Simon Wu in the final. Bob, a new recruit from India, and Simon a transfer student from Kwantlen, upset the #2 and #3 seeds to reach the final. In other results, Lisa Chen and Amy Leung finished 3rd in the women’s doubles event and Bob Sharma finished 3rd in the men’s singles event.
